Instead, we talk about water resistance or ingress protection, measured by the IP rating (International Protection marking or Ingress Protection). This rating tells you precisely what level of protection the hoist’s electrical components have against solids (like dust) and liquids (like water).

Decoding the IP Rating

An IP rating consists of “IP” followed by two digits:

1. First Digit (Solid Particle Protection): Ranges from 0 (no protection) ĐẾN 6 (dust-tight).

2. Second Digit (Liquid Ingress Protection): This is the crucial one for water. It ranges from 0 (no protection) to 9K (high-pressure, high-temperature water jets). For typical water resistance concerns, focus on digits 4 ĐẾN 8.

Common IP Ratings for Electric Hoists & What They Mean for Water

• IP44:

  • Protection: Protected against solid objects >1mm and water splashed from any direction.
  • Suitable for: Light indoor dampness, occasional minor splashes. Not suitable for outdoor use exposed to rain, prolonged dampness, or washdowns.

• IP54:

  • Protection: Dust-protected (limited ingress, not harmful) and protected against water splashes from any direction.
  • Suitable for: Most general indoor industrial environments, workshops with some dust/moisture. Better dust protection than IP44, but similar water resistance. Still not recommended for significant rain or direct hose-down.

• IP55:

  • Protection: Dust-protected and protected against low-pressure water jets (6.3mm nozzle) from any direction.
  • Suitable for: Outdoor use where it might be exposed to rain or occasional hose-down (if specified by the manufacturer). A common rating for hoists designed for tougher industrial or semi-outdoor use. Not submersible.

• IP65:

  • Protection: Dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets (6.3mm nozzle) from any direction. Offers complete dust protection.
  • Suitable for: Outdoor use, environments with significant dust or where washdowns with low-pressure hoses are required (VÍ DỤ., food & beverage, certain manufacturing). A good standard for robust water and dust resistance. Not submersible.

• IP66 / IP67:

Key Considerations

• 1. Check the SPECIFIC Rating: Never assume. The IP rating must be clearly stated in the hoist’s technical specifications or on its nameplate. This is non-negotiable for safety.

• 2. “Waterproof” is Rare: Truly waterproof (constant submersion, IP68/69K) hoists are specialized and costly. Most standard hoists are IP55 or below.

• 3. Corrosion: Even with a good IP rating, prolonged exposure to moisture (especially salt water) causes corrosion. Look for hoists with corrosion-resistant materials (VÍ DỤ., stainless steel components, special coatings) if operating in harsh environments.

• Require frequent washdowns or dusty/wet industrial settings? IP65 is strongly recommended.
• Facing marine use, heavy spray, or potential submersion? IP66/IP67 is essential.
